As a variation on traditional show and tell, direct students to bring in a show-and-tell item that begins with a particular letter. For very young students, you may wish to correlate show-and-tell with a letter-of-the-week. Slightly older students might be asked to bring in an object that starts with any of the letters studied in a given week. More advanced students might be given more complex instructions (For instance, one half of the class might be assigned to bring in a soft "g" show-and-tell, while the other is required to bring in a hard "g" show and tell.) or asked to bring in an object that fits in a certain word family, that rhymes with a particular word, that ends with certain digraph, etc.
As an extension of this activity, consider taking a digital picture of each child with his or her object, having the child write the name of the object, then making a class phonics poster or book using the words and pictures.
